Moving a Personal Vehicle into Your Massachusetts Business (LLC or Corporations)

Moving a Vehicle Into Your Massachusetts Business

If you have a personally owned vehicle that you plan to transfer into a newly formed corporation or LLC, Massachusetts generally allows 90 days from the date the business is formed to complete the transfer without paying sales tax, provided the transfer qualifies and the proper paperwork is filed.

You will still need to pay the applicable title fee, which is currently $75, along with any registration or plate fees. The Massachusetts Form MVU-25 is typically used to claim the sales-tax exemption for a vehicle transferred into a business entity.

Once the IRS sends your business its EIN confirmation, keep it in a safe place. The original document is generally called a CP 575 notice. If you need a replacement, the IRS can issue a Letter 147C. This documentation may be required when registering a commercial vehicle in Massachusetts.

It may also be helpful to establish your corporation or LLC with the Massachusetts RMV, even if you are not immediately registering a vehicle. Having the business information on file can make the process easier when you later transfer or purchase a commercial vehicle.

Requirements can vary depending on how the vehicle is owned and transferred, so confirm the details with your accountant, insurance agent, or the Massachusetts RMV before completing the transaction.pt, or the Department of Motor Vehicles
